IPCC investigating claims Scotland Yard illegally hired hackers
The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating allegations claiming a secret Scotland Yard department hired hackers to illegally access the private emails of political campaigners and journalists, the Guardian reports. An anonymous letter written by one of the individuals working in the Scotland Yard unit said the group worked in conjunction with Indian police to have the hackers obtain their targets’ email passwords. The passwords were then sent to the Metropolitan police, who would regularly check emails for information. “There is more than enough to justify a full-scale criminal investigation into the activities of these police officers and referral to a public inquiry,” said Green party peer Jenny Jones, who received the letter.
